What
things do we offer?
ASSIS volunteers can encourage international
students to visit their homes, meet their families
and join-in outings. It may be a “Bring
a Plate” (with food, of course on it), “Bring
or buy your own Lunch” or “Come
and cook with me in my kitchen”. You
may decide to visit a shopping centre together
for “Coffee and Cake”.
There are often Family
Parties where a group of students and seniors
get together to share stories, their experiences
and share a meal. You may even start to write
stories together. Seniors often enjoy the
chance to have tea or coffee in your home
or accommodation. They would love to know
more about your homeland too.
Perhaps one or more of our volunteers can share
your Graduation Celebrations with you if you
are alone in Australia.
There are many times when international students,
(some from non-English speaking backgrounds)
find it is especially hard. When students first
arrive they are optimistic and eager to start
their studies. Day one for student and volunteer
should be as soon as possible, because soon
enough that honeymoon period is over and the
Lectures are in terrible English - quite different
to the one you felt confident with at home.
Assignments are due, and the stress of leaving
home really hurts.
The senior may have just retired, feeling bored
and need to do something. He or she may
have just lost a partner and needs cheering
up too. The student and the senior have
similar needs. Support and a friendly face.
ASSIS CAN ASSIST. The pressure of study
in a strange language is similar to the
pressure of starting a new life as a retiree.
